Guest Speakers

Guest speaker today is Maxine Tobias to talk to us about that subject we have all forgotten about; Alzheimer’s and how to look after your brain. This is a Federal Government initiative and she also comes well recommended from other Probus clubs that have heard her speak. In June; Mr Ernie Bennett from UA 3 University to talk to us about that organisation and we understand that he is an excellent raconteur as well.

Our guest speaker for July is Mr Vic Armstrong President of the ARDC to talk to us about the benefits of retirement villages and the pitfalls of which there seems to be plenty; considering the court cases involved, mainly residents suing corporations

In August after some hard and smart work; we will have the Prince of guest speakers come back to us as promised; I am referring to Dr Wally Wood a professor of forensic science; talking to us this time about a gruesome subject, “After dinner crocodile mince”.

For September we have Dr Chris Barrett who is the Clinical Liaison Manager Eye Care Sunshine Coast; to do with that monster, Macular Degeneration. We have Pat and Miles Smith to thank for the contact.

Our local Queensland State Member M/S Fiona Simpson has agreed to talk to us during the October or November meeting. This will depend on the sitting of Queensland State Parliament.

No speaker in December due to the clubs annual Christmas party but Arthur and Irene are putting on one of their famous trivia quiz days for us, so study hard live well and you might impress them.

Pontoon Boats

I keep on saying what a great day we have and it is because of the attitude of the people involved; however this is the case and it is true of just about every outing we have these days. Of course the scenic venue and the clement weather did help considerably, in this instance.

Twenty three of us turned up on time to man (or is it person) two boats, which were fully equipped with all the hardware you would need for a pleasant day on the Maroochy River. The committee supplied all the eats and drinks and this was inclusive in the price of $26.00 per head, a bargain at half the price; working out at $6.50 per head per boating hour, including lunch and drinks.  We had one apology from a lady member; evidentially she had been out night clubbing the previous evening and didn’t get home in time for a 10 AM start.

Alan Speechly and Freddy Workum did a great job as captains for the day and we thank them very much for their professional service. We didn’t end up on Gilligan’s Island, instead we motored steadily up the river for about an hour and rafted up for about two hours, socialising, eating and drinking and generally enjoying ourselves.

Doreen and Ellis made sure all the details were properly covered in the catering department and the on board barbecue went off well on both boats and for this we thank them as well. The highlight of the day was Lorraine catching a fish, some thought she caught two fish but in fact I have it from a reliable source that she caught the same fish twice.

If there was any criticism of the day, it was that it didn’t go long enough but the last venture of this king we understood was for that length of time and we thought that this was a good starting point. And a cask of cold “Chardy” would have gone down pleasantly as well. It was suggested that we have this excursion again next year and we try six hours from 10 am to 4 pm, let us know what you think please.
