The Rotarians Against
Malaria (
Attendees at the conference dinner Saturday night were treated to a presentation from Guest Speaker Dr Katherine Trenholme, who has studied overseas and in Australa and is the current Senior Research Fellow, Malaria Biology Laboratory, Queensland Institute of Medical Research.
Her presentation ‘Starving malaria parasites to death’ took the non-medically trained into the realm of aminopeptidases, which we all use to digest our food, and which the parasite needs to digest up to 75% of the gamma globulin in the blood of the victim.
There has been some success in developing inhibitors that prevent the malaria parasite from producing this protein, without which it cannot digest its food, and starves to death. However global application is still at least 15 years away.
Two hundred and eighty people attended the Rotary Club of Lae’s fourth annual Black Tie Ball at the Lae International Hotel on Saturday 13 June 2009 and raised 100,000kina (nearly $A50,000) for the Rotarians Against Malaria ‘Adopt a Village’ program.
President of the Rotary Club of Lae, Chris Wakelin, said the positive impact of treated nets and fresh safe water in the region was assisting in reducing deaths in the community.
Globally, there are between 1.5 and 2.7 million malaria deaths each year, mostly children under five and pregnant women. Around one million of those deaths occur in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Adopt a Village program has reduced the incidence of malaria in some villages by up to 80% and maternal deaths by up to 30%.
Just think – your $10 could save the life of someone you will probably never meet.

Last year, Chân Carroll raised over $1,600 for Australian Rotary Health through sales of her “Spice Up Your Days” 2009 diary that was much appreciated both as a present and as a useful planning tool. Similarly, the “Nuts about Nuts 2010” issues are not just ordinary diaries and calendars but are attractively illustrated publications with 12 fascinating articles about different kinds of edible nuts - one for each month of the year. Save water, help the environment and
the community
Lack of
water is an issue that we can no longer ignore world wide and
particularly in
Australia . We all need to take
responsibility for saving water and raising awareness in the community,
through changing the attitude of the user to conserving our PRECIOUS
resource “WATER”.
Aqua
Clic is the only flow controller on the Australian Market that raises
awareness through a practical solution. They are not your usual water
saving device, they are foremost an educational and promotional product
and once placed on the end of a tap will help reduce the water flow.
